Questions

What is EFT Tapping?

EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques and is a groundbreaking technique combining psychotherapy and acupressure, with elements of exposure, cognitive therapy and somatic stimulation.

It is successfully used by thousands of practitioners around the world and is regarded to be part of the 4th wave of psychotherapeutic techniques in that it includes a somatic component and can give relatively drastic improvements in less than 6 sessions compared to standard talk therapy.

How many sessions will I need?

The best way to answer this question is for us to chat on the phone and discuss the scope of your issues. I usually get a good idea of how many sessions would be best for you after our half-hour discovery call. All my programs are designed to give you profound healing and transformation in a relatively short amount of time partly due to the additional tools and resources I teach and give you. You can read more about the differences in my programmes →

Is EFT scientifically proven?

There are increasingly more studies to demonstrate the effectiveness of EFT in reducing stress, anxiety, PTSD, food cravings and other addictions including the following:

1. A randomized, controlled trial from 2016 involved 10 people who took part in an 8-week program of either CBT or EFT. The results showed both treatments significantly reduced symptoms of depression and led to improvements in anxiety.

2. A 2019 study involving 203 individuals tested the physical reactions and psychological symptoms of people attending EFT workshops. Participants experienced significant reductions in anxiety, depression, and PTSD symptoms, as well as in pain levels and cravings. They also reported improvements in happiness. Results showed improvements in heart rate, blood pressure, and levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

3. A 2012 study involving 30 students with moderate-to-severe depression reported that those who received four group sessions of EFT treatment had significantly less depression than those in the control group, who received no treatment.

4. A 2016 review of 20 studies reported that EFT was highly effective in reducing the symptoms of depression. The findings suggested that EFT was equal to or better than other standard treatments for depression.

5. In a 2013 study, 30 veterans who received EFT treatment along with standard care had significantly less psychological distress and PTSD symptoms than those who were on a waiting list for treatment. After three and six sessions, 60.0% and 85.7% of these participants respectively no longer met the PTSD clinical criteria indicating the long term benefits of EFT.

6. In a 2017 survey of EFT practitioners, 63% reported that EFT could resolve even complex PTSD in 10 sessions or fewer. Almost 90% of respondents stated that less than 10% of their clients make little or no progress.

What is the science behind EFT Tapping?

Recent groundbreaking research by Dr Peta Stapleton used fMRI scans to show actual physical and scientific evidence of how EFT’s techniques work by changing the brain’s neural pathways. Tapping appears to calm the ‘stress’ areas of the brain such as the hippocampus and the amygdala, releasing us from stressors that can result in bad habits. Participants were shown pictures of food, pre and post Tapping while having a brain scan. Commenting on the participants and their scans, Dr Stapleton said, “After four weeks of EFT we expected to see those parts of the brain that usually activate their cravings and hunger in response to certain foods would no longer do so, and this has certainly been the case,” she continued, “The brain’s neural pathways ‘rewire’ and their desire for those foods diminishes.”

What is mindset coaching?

Mindset coaching is dedicated to rewiring an individual's mindset to allow them to let go of what’s holding them back and to unlock their full potential. This type of coaching typically avoids direct advice-giving but rather encourages the person to connect to their own inner guidance whilst supporting them along the way. Like therapy, a lot of work goes into uncovering the root cause of a person’s issues and reframing any unhelpful beliefs that a person may be carrying so that they can move forward in a new and constructive direction.

How does it work?

EFT combines acupressure point stimulation with elements of talk therapy. By gently stimulating or tapping pressure points on the body with fingers, EFT results in a calming effect on the amygdala (the stress centre of the brain) and the hippocampus (the brain’s memory centre), both of which play a role in determining if something is, or isn’t, a threat, and in the fight or flight response. EFT also seems to have the same calming effect on the major stress hormone cortisol. Clinical trials have shown that EFT is able to rapidly reduce the emotional impact of memories and incidents that trigger emotional distress resulting in lowered cortisol levels in the blood.
